The NYC Marathon is named a “Safe Space”

“The marathon included a nonbinary category for the first time in 2021, and added prize money for the category this year. The second- through fifth-place finishers will also receive a payout.

Also this year, the Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative, the charitable organization of the historic gay bar, named the New York City Marathon a “Safe Space” for its efforts in diversity and inclusion, making it the first sporting event to be given that determination.

The marathon passed a 10-step certification process that involved a training program and a review of the organization and event to ensure efforts such as the use of gender-neutral bathrooms, acknowledgment of pronouns and support for the L.G.B.T.Q. community throughout the year.” – Nadav Gavrielov, The New York Times
