After the tragedy at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, A+E built a coalition including The United Way, NAACP, Legal Defense Fund, Anti-Defamation League, Race Forward and other leading anti-bias/hate organizations to launch Shining a Light: A Concert for Progress on Race in America.

The roadblock telecast benefit concert brought artists of different races and ethnic backgrounds together to perform once-in-a-lifetime duets and collaborations. Shining a Light was welcomed in the AME Church in Charleston – at the heart of the tragedy – where Pharrell Williams performed during mass.

The efforts continued through PSAs, roundtables and town halls led by John Legend, Alicia Keys and Pharrell. As part of this campaign, The Fund for Progress on Race in America was created to distribute grants to initiatives that work to heal historic racial divides, identify and eradicate bias, and activate solutions.
